Brethren,
As
we look to the coming of summer and the traditional beginning on Memorial Day
let us pause a moment and reflect on the true meaning. Memorial Day, first known as Decoration Day
traces its roots to the end of the Civil War.
It was first established to recognize Union Soldiers killed in
action. It was later in 1882 that it was
expanded to recognize men and women in all conflicts. It is important for us to always without
these sacrifices; we would not have the many freedoms we enjoy today.
I
have always heard the many stories from my own parents and grandparents talking
about the star which during World War II were displayed in the windows of homes
where loved ones were away serving. It
was especially difficult when the stars in the flags changed from blue to
gold. This signified the loss of a loved
one. This effected many families during
that time, my own included. Believe it
or not, we still have the gold star awarded to my great-grandmother and I make
a point to explain this to my children, as the star is now in my wife's
possession.
Let
us all pause a few minutes on Memorial Day and reflect on its real significance
to us and our country
Fraternally,
Bernard M. Byrne
